BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Process Safety Engineer in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
Job Description SummaryThe Process Safety Engineer is accountable for the overall management of BD’s Process Safety program across sites with high hazard operations (HHO). They will work with BD sites with high hazard operations to integrate Process Safety Management (PSM) and Operational Excellence principles in order to support compliance, safety performance, and productivity in alignment with BD’s EHS standards.
The Engineer is responsible for the organizational learning of PSM for sites who have high hazard operations. They will also facilitate incident investigations, causal factor analysis, and preventative actions utilizing the core elements of PSM, Lean Manufacturing, and other productivity toolsets. The Engineer will work to enhance operational excellence and best practices through knowledge sharing, process optimization, and implementation of PSM elements in partnership with the EHS Cluster Leaders.
The Engineer anticipates and understands critical opportunities and business needs, and how they can be enhanced through adherence to PSM principles and best practice.This role is part of the Corporate EHS group, and therefore will collaborate group projects, and participate on the Corporate EHS Audit team as needed. The position reports directly to the Director, EHS Audit.
In partnership with Cluster EHS Leaders, develops a comprehensive and strategic approach to rollout the BD High Hazard/PSM Program, including:
PHA execution and follow-up, to ensure timely closeout of findings
Effective implementation of HHO/PSM program elements
Development of KPIs
Training and assuring compliance.
Provides leadership, counsel and technical assistance in the field of process safety management across BD sites with existing high hazard operations, or to new projects which may include them.
Leads and documents the PHA/hazard evaluations of each phase of a large project or a new process.
Trains associates on PHA analysis and develops facilitators and subject matter experts; identifies process safety knowledge gaps and potential solutions.
Develops and provides training forums on PSM program elements and ensures effective rollout in partnership with the Cluster Leaders.
Provides a level of oversight on incident investigations and root cause analysis related to High Hazard operation incidents
Develops and implements key performance indicators (leading and lagging) to track the progress of BD’s High Hazard/PSM program.
Evaluates new processes or modifications to existing processes/facilities to meet requirements.
Works in tandem with the maintenance organization to develop, coordinate and evaluate maintenance programs for highly technical equipment for High Hazard Operations.
Participates on teams responsible for implementing new products and processes related to High Hazard or PSM.
Participates on the Corporate EHS Audit team as necessary.
Ability to travel (at times, up to 50%)
Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including technical staff, business team leaders, union personnel and be able to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results; good training skills
Knowledge of regulatory requirements, procedures and legislative process in the EHS field
Excellent communication skills, personal rapport and motivation are required to effectively coach internal staff and work with outside groups and agencies engaged in process safety; experience in applying technology through teamwork

BS degree in chemical or mechanical engineering or relevant science background preferred
7-10 years’ experience in a PSM regulated environment
Auditing certification preferred but not required
Experience in a PSM environment and leading PSM programs
Experience in Fire Loss and Prevention activities including involvement with insurance carrier
Experience in auditing
