The Principal Materials Engineer is responsible for resin selection, development, implementation and ongoing support of plastic molded commodities that support Abbott's diagnostic instruments. Partnering with other members of the Engineering organization in the development, design, and launch of new commodities and support of the on-market portfolio. Serve as both a technical expert in polymer resin and other materials as well as a project manager for material intensive projects. Working regularly with R&D, Operations, Supply chain, Quality and suppliers. Manage molded commodities over product life-cycle including tactical and strategic activities to support ongoing business such as product, process, quality and cost improvement initiatives, supplier and resin changes, and obsolescence. Troubleshoot product issues in conjunction with supplier and lead/support internal investigations as needed. Work closely with molding suppliers to ensure reliable supply of parts. Responsible for ensuring adherence to quality system through creation and update of specifications, metrology setup, design control and qualification, FMEA, and other, as appropriate. Must have proven ability to participate in team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of appropriate urgency and maintain effective working relationships with peers, customers and vendors.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Requirements gathering, resin selection and development, contributing to commodity, tooling and process design, procurement and qualification
Development of cost estimates for capital and expense.
Create and maintain project schedules, oversee cross-functional team activities to achieve program objectives
Transfer of molds to new suppliers, startup of new suppliers.
Concurrent management of multiple projects.
Regularly interaction with resin, material and molding suppliers to meet quality and cost objectives.
Participate in cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve material and other product issues.
Build, test and evaluate prototypes
Identify and evaluate potential cost improvement projects through advanced technologies or resin changes.
This position reports to Director of Molding and Packaging Engineering.
Position manages projects from $50M to $2MM with critical milestones as well as is responsible for the reliable supply of materials for molded commodities to all sites and customers.
Must ensure that all materials are in compliance with all quality standards and procedures.
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or technical discipline, advanced degree desired, plus demonstrated competence 5+ years technical work experience with 3+ years of plastic injection and/or blow molding design and process support experience, preferably in the medical device industry. Knowledge of plastics processes, resins, tooling required. Knowledge of FDA QSR's and ISO requirements preferred.
